Hunter Valley Christians are calling people back to the church Jesus built. Matthew 16:18.
This church of Christ does not wear any humanly devised name; it wears only the name of its builder, Christ. That’s why we call ourselves a church of Christ – not a denominational name, but description of who we are: a church belonging to Christ! That’s also why we simply call ourselves Christians, which means “those in Christ.” We honour the name of our leader and Saviour: Christ.
Jesus’ church as seen in the New Testament does not have any hierarchies or synods, conferences or moderators, archbishops or popes. Churches truly of Christ strive for a unity of faith and practice based upon God’s word - not the traditions, regulations and organizational structures developed by mere humans.John 17:7-24; Mark 7:1-9; Ephesians 4:3-6; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 3:3-17; 4:17; 14:33; 1 Timothy 3:15.
Love rejoices in truth. 1 Corinthians 13:6.
Humans have no mandate to build their own churches. Rather, we must desire to build well on the foundation of Christ and his apostles. Acts 4:12; 1 Corinthians 3:1-4:6; Ephesians 2:19-22.
We function as a self-governing assembly of God’s chosen people. Romans 16:16; 1 Peter 2:9-10. We know of about 80 such churches around Australia, and hope there are many more. We cherish the church that Jesus built, Matthew 16:18, and for which he died, Acts 20:28, and plead with denominations to abandon their differences.
If you ever want to visit our assembly, the Lord’s church in the Hunter Valley extends a warm welcome. We strive to be a welcoming family. By God’s grace we have been adopted into His family – the church of the living God – to assemble in the Spirit in preparation for the great eternal assembly in heaven. Because this is true, we always have a secure place to belong and a place in which to enjoy the love and acceptance of Jesus Christ. In his eternal yet practical wisdom, God desires that you discover a life full of hope, peace, joy, love and purpose. We believe that in the church at East Maitland in the Hunter Valley you will find us warmly encouraging. We invite you to make this discovery yourself.
